Pretty Gritty (with special guest David Alderdice) will be performing an intimate concert at Cavalcade. The show is only $12 and there will be limited availability. Contact ken@cavalcadefruita.com for tickets or purchase at the link below. BIO - Pretty Gritty is the serendipitous joining of the talents of Blaine Heinonen and Sarah Wolff, both born and raised in Montgomery County, MD. Although they originate from different rock bands, fate brought them together at local "open-mic" nights, where it became evident that they shared an interest in writing and performing songs that mix country, rock, blues, and soul. It's said that she brings the "pretty" while he brings the "gritty," combining for an engaging alt-country duo with seducing harmonies and addicting acoustics.

Join host and psychologist Gen Morris and a host of other caring BirthSmart folks as we gather to laugh, cry, and share birth stories. This special event is open to all Grand Valley women (sorry, gentlemen) aged 15 and up, whether you have given birth or are anticipating it someday. Telling birth stories goes back to ancient times as vetern mothers sought to prepare mothers-to-be for giving birth. Come listen and decide what you want for your next birth, and take solace in the sisterhood of motherhood.
Tickets for this event are FREE and all patrons will receive a complimentary goody bag full of freebies. Order your ticket now and receive a FREE Music Together session when you sign-up for a 10-session Music Together class. Now that's a great deal right there, that is.
FAQ's
Where should I park?
Ample parking is available behind the hotel. Just come 'round to the back.
Will there be childcare?
Mt. Harvard & Columbia
14ers Mega- Hike
/// two BIG mountains in 1 BIG push \\\
14,420 & 14,073
To do Harvard & Columbia separately, each is a 13.5mi round trip. To do them together it's a 15mi loop. So what's another 1.5mis, right?
And roughly 2,000 more feet elevation (6,100' total).
So this is going to take terrific conditioning, strength, determination, and experience at high-elevation hiking. It's rated a class 2, so it's not technical, no special equipment required, just a loooooong day.
As a friend of mine would say, "walking up hill very slowly for hours and hours." But it's the downhill that kills the knees!
The goal would be to hit the trail by 5:30am (sunrise then should be 5:40, so it will be getting light).
I plan on going down Friday afternoon after work and camping near the trail head. We can work out a way for everyone to meet.
WHAT:
It's a reprise of our very 1st event that kicked things off for "Grand Junction Hike-N-Bike" on February 1st! Who could have predicted what a huge success our outdoors Meetup group would become? Well ... ANYONE!!! :)
If you missed this fun relaxing ride the 1st time, come join us now. Less than 4mis of the route will take place on an actual "road" (and only 1.25 mis of that is in traffic). The remaining 9.25 mis will be on the smooth wide brilliantly-maintained Riverfront Trail running along the Colorado River. As we weave our way through the marshes, lakes & along the river, there will be the opportunity to see many Canada geese and very possibly a blue heron!
WHERE:
We will meet in the Riverfront Trail parking area for the Watson Island Section part of the trail, right next to the Botanical Gardens on Struthers Avenue. That street can be accessed from the Riverfront Parkway (or by crossing the Riverfront Parkway) at either seventh Street or ninth Street.
WHAT:
Mountain bike the latest addition to the trails at eighteen Road in the North Fruita Desert ... the brand-new PBR track!
This trail will start near Chutes & Ladders and end back near the trailhead. It will consist of pumps, berms, and rollers or PBR. Also known as "Pumptrack Trail", it is laid out in a fashion to be enjoyed by everyone. Ridden slowly, PBR can provide large grins of joy with the tires on the ground. Need some air? PBR can provide plenty of gravity-induced endorphins if a rider is willing to do some hard pedaling to gain and maintain speed.
To get to the top of the PBR, we'll ride up Prime Cut. Less-skilled riders are welcome to come down the Kessels Run trail instead or to even explore other adjacent trails in the area such as the Vegetarian, Down Uppity or Edge Loop trails.
A new BLM, just released on April 23, showing the layout of the entire current system (three more trails will be added later this year!) can be seen here:
Come for a Photo Outing to the Colorado River.
this is a repeat outing. Next week's will be the 2nd of a series of outings that take us into different terrains
I sat in a Duck Blind this evening and took several shots of small birds (missed the beaver); light on the water and listened to the sounds of the evening.
So beautiful, so quiet and so many photo opportunities for wildlife, light in the trees, insects in flight.
I-70 to Fruita. Take the Fruita exit and turn south towards the river. Go through the round about straight through towards the river. Cross the river, head up the hill and take the 1st right (King's View Rd) (@ 1mi). The same road that takes you to Devil's Canyon, Polluck Canyon, etc. Keep going on this road for about 4 mis until you see a sign that says "All Visitors Must Check In" next to a parking lot, and a kiosk for the Horsethief Wildlife Viewing area. We'll park and walk in along a dirt road about five minutes.

The Western Slope Conservative Alliance will host a Sheriff's panel discussion on the Constitutional authority of our highest county officials. We invite all those who are concerned about the overreach of the Federal Government in all aspects of our lives, the NDAA, the possibility of martial law, etc. to attend and pose questions for our Western Colorado Sheriffs from Delta, Moffat, Garfield, Montrose, Rio Blanco, Route, and Mesa counties. We are waiting for confirmation from the sheriffs of three other counties.
WHAT:
A recent evening hike along the upper part of Gunny Loop on the east side of Little Park Road turned out to be a really fun 1st taste of this beautiful trail. fifteen members & four dogs dodged some wind, a few passing sprinkles and even got to experience this amazing double rainbow! Tonight we'll set up a car shuttle 2.75 mis up Little Park Road from where we'll end up to enjoy a whole lot more of this spectacular trail. And we'll get to do it for almost 6 mis by going almost the whole way DOWNHILL!!!
WHERE:
Take Broadway to Monument Road. The left to D Road comes up quickly. That turns into Rosevale, which eventually veers right to Little Park Road. The turn-off for the parking area is less than a half-mile from that point on the right side (see map link above). It's a little confusing, partly because the turn-off is totally unmarked and partly because the Google map is slightly inaccurate.
